Learning Standard/Objectives:
Spell high- frequency words from a commonly used list. ELAR 23C (ELPS 3A)

Instructional Resources: Open Court Reading: First Reader; Word Wall Words
Instructional Considerations:
• Start session by asking some anticipatory questions about what tutee already knew about snow.
• Read aloud a non-fiction text, Snow is Good, (SRA Open Court Reading) pause at certain points to check on comprehension.
• Ask some comprehension questions.
• Read some of the high frequency words found in the story.
• Practice reading the high frequency words on the word wall.

Student’s Task: Tutee will write some high frequency in ABC order (A-C for today). Practice reading when finished.

Extension: Tutee will keep her high frequency word cards in a small box called Word Bank.

Instructional Consideration/ Procedures:
• Read aloud Corduroy by Don Freeman pausing at certain points to check on comprehension.
• Practice reading Dolch Word List and Word Wall words.
• Conduct a running record using the story Dad’s Headache consisting of 74 words to check on oral fluency and accuracy.

Student’s Task: Read aloud a book of her choice. Continue adding words to her Word Bank.

Stories and Scoring Sheets for running records, Nana’s Kitchen, Word List

Instructional Considerations:
• Read aloud story, Nana’s Kitchen by Darwin McBeth Walton.  Pause at certain points to check on understanding.
• Practice reading Dolch Word List or Word Wall List for practice on sight words.
• Give Running Record, Mom's Birthday with 97 words and record scores.
• Have her read the story Nana’s Kitchen on her own. (Student mentioned cooking with mom or grandma is her favorite hobby).

Instructional Resources: Instant Fry's Word List, list of onset and rimes, decodable texts, Level C Set 1
Instructional Considerations: 
  • Record Student's reading of Instant Fry's Word List.
  • Student reads decodable text Fake Snake.Teach explicitly vowel sounds followed by -re patterns: cake-care, tile-tire, cube-cure, fine-fire
  • Practice separating the onset from the rime for Vre words: c-ure, t-ire, b-are
Informal Assessment:  Observe and record student's reading behaviors.

  • Read aloud "Dragons and Giants" and check on comprehension.
  • Have student retell the story in sequence using Shape Map retelling graphic organizer.

Instructional Considerations:
  • Pracrice reading High Frequency Word Wall words.
  • Read onset and rimes, changing the initial consonant sound; making own words.
  • Using a lap white board, student writes some spelling words from dictation.
Evaluation:  Observe student's reading and writing.behavior.

  • Practice reading Instant Word Lists- Phrases for fluency practice and word identification.
  • Student reads with teacher /ou/ words by phonograms:  pouch, couch, grouch, found, loud;  /ee/, /ea/ words: deer, need, seed, been, seem, bead, clean, bean,meal, seal. 
  • Student writes the phonogram pairs in index cards. 
Evaluation: Ongoing assesssment of student.

  • Using the vowel charts, practice reading the words individually or with a partner.
  • Using the index cards, sort the words with /ea/, /ee/, /ou/, /ow/, /oa/.
  • Read decodable text with long and short vowels, vowel digraphs, or consonant blends.
Evaluation: Check student's index cards and listen to student's reading.
